Lithotripsy is derived from the Greek words meaning breaking stones. Lithotripsy is the medical procedure which involves destruction of hardened masses like renal or kidney stones and gall bladder stones.

Lithotripsy involves sending shock waves to break kidney stones into tiny pieces which can pass through the urinary track on their own.

The procedure is effective in getting rid of stones from kidneys and ureters without the need for surgery to remove the stones.

The kidney stones that are small can pass out through urine but sometimes it is not a possible form of elimination and can cause problems. Some of the causes for performing lithotripsy are:

The treatment for kidney stone depends on the type of kidney stone. There are various treatment strategies, though the most common one is ESWL or Electric Shock Wave Lithotripsy. The options are as follows:

1. Lithotripsy

Best Varicocele Treatment

It is done by fragmenting the larger kidney stones with sound waves of high frequency so that they pass out of the body through the urine.

2. Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy(PCNL)/ Tunnel Surgery

Best Varicocele Treatment

It is done by making incisions on the back to remove stones that are obstructing, infecting and damaging the kidney as they are too big and causing pain.

3. Ureterorenoscopy/ Uretroscopy

Best Varicocele Treatment

It is also called retrograde intra-renal surgery. It is done by removing the kidney stone with an uretero-scope which has a small camera and a device to remove the stone for further analysis.

4. Medication

The continuous pain needs to be addressed with pain medication along with antibiotics for infection.

Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, ESWL

ESWL or Lithotripsy is done on people with kidney stone that causes pain or blocks the flow of urine. The best candidates for ESWL or lithotripsy are those with stones sized between 4 mm to 2 cm in diameter which can be broken with lithotripsy.

ESWL or Lithotripsy is done on people with kidney stone that causes pain or blocks the flow of urine. The best candidates for ESWL or lithotripsy are those with stones sized between 4 mm to 2 cm in diameter which can be broken with lithotripsy.

People with kidney stones can undergo lithotripsy. However, a lady who is pregnant, a person with bleeding disorder, kidney or urinary tract infection, cancer or abnormally structured kidney cannot undergo lithotripsy.

ESWL or Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy is the most commonly performed lithotripsy procedure for kidney stones. It takes about 45 minutes to an hour. Sedatives and anaesthetics are given for a pain free surgery. The procedure is done by making you lie on an examination table on top of a water filled cushion to make it soft. You would be given sedatives and pain killers and antibiotics before the procedure is started.

Ultrasound or fluoroscopy is used to locate the position of the kidney stone. A taping sensation can be felt during the procedure. High energy shock waves are passed through the body to hit kidney stones, which breaks the stones into tiny pieces. To help easy passage of fragmented stone particles a stent is placed in the ureter. The procedure ends with all the stone particles being small enough to pass through urine.

The procedure is straight forward and does not need hospitalization. You would stay at the hospital for 2-3 hours after the procedure and can go back the same day. You can continue with your daily activities after a day or two of the procedure.

No special diet is required, but it is advised to drink plenty of water to help the stone fragments pass. You may feel some pain while the fragments pass, which may last up to four to eight weeks.

Results from Lithotripsy are quite rewarding. For 9 out of 10 patients with stones in kidney or ureter smaller than 10 mm, lithotripsy helps get rid of all stones or leaves only tiny segments that do not cause any symptoms.

Kidney stones treatment in India is done on outpatient basis or you may need to stay at the hospital in India for one night. Stay of one week to ten days is enough for your kidney stones surgery in India.
